National Skin Care Awareness Month: The 5 Things a Master Aesthetician Wants You to Know

September is National Skin Care Awareness Month — and after 18 years working in plastic surgery and dermatology practices, treating thousands of clients, and earning 52+ professional certifications, I have a very clear sense of what most people misunderstand about their skin. Here are the five things I want everyone to know.

1. Your Skin Is an Organ — Treat It Like One

This sounds obvious, but the implications are profound. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It has immune function, hormonal receptors, a microbiome, a barrier system, and a direct communication channel with your gut, brain, and endocrine system. When you treat it as purely cosmetic — as something to cover up or superficially manage — you miss the deeper conversation it's trying to have with you. Chronic acne is often a systemic inflammatory signal. Persistent sensitivity frequently reflects gut dysbiosis or hormonal imbalance. Treating the skin means understanding the whole person.

2. Prevention Is Exponentially More Effective Than Correction

I say this to every client who comes to me in their 40s wishing they'd started earlier: the cost of prevention is always lower than the cost of correction — in time, money, and effort. Daily SPF started at 25 prevents the sun damage that costs thousands to treat at 45. Retinol started at 30 maintains the collagen density that takes a full clinical protocol to rebuild at 50. The best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is today.

3. Your Skincare Routine Is Only as Good as Your Consistency

The most brilliantly formulated serum in the world does nothing sitting on a shelf. The clients in my practice who see the most transformative results are almost never using the most expensive or complex protocols — they're the ones who do the simple things consistently, every single day. Cleanser. Vitamin C. SPF in the morning. Retinol. Moisturizer. That's the foundation that everything else builds on.

4. More Actives Is Not Better

One of the most common things I see in new client consultations is a 12-product routine that's doing more harm than good. Layering retinol, vitamin C, multiple acids, and prescription treatments without a strategic protocol framework leads to barrier damage, chronic sensitivity, and often the exact concerns the person was trying to solve. Simplify. Choose fewer products that work synergistically. Give each one time to work before adding the next.

5. Your Skin Can Change — at Any Age

This is the one I'm most passionate about. I have seen 60-year-old skin transform dramatically with the right protocol. I have seen chronic acne resolve after decades when the gut-skin connection was finally addressed. I have watched hyperpigmentation that seemed permanent fade to near-invisible with consistent, evidence-based treatment. Your skin is not fixed. It is responsive, regenerative, and remarkable — and with the right support, it will show you what it's capable of.
