The Summer Skin Survival Guide — What a Master Aesthetician Does from June Through August

Summer in South Florida is not the same as summer in Chicago or Seattle. But here's the thing — UV damage doesn't care where you live. Whether you're in Palm Beach or Portland, the shift into longer days and more outdoor exposure demands a meaningful shift in how you protect and care for your skin. Here is exactly how I think about summer skin, and what I change in my own protocol every June.

The First Priority: Layered Sun Protection

Daily SPF is non-negotiable year-round, but summer requires an upgrade in both application and strategy. In the summer months, I layer antioxidant protection with my SPF instead of treating them separately. The approach: a vitamin C serum in the morning (specifically the Advanced Vita CE Ferulic Acid Serum — the ferulic acid doubles its photoprotective power) followed immediately by SPF. This two-layer approach neutralizes free radicals before they damage DNA, rather than just absorbing UV radiation after the fact.

For SPF, I keep both a tinted option and a pure mineral option. The Sun Ritual SPF 40 for daily wear and makeup-friendly use, and the Sun Ritual ZincGuard for outdoor activities, pool days, or post-treatment skin.

The Summer Hyperpigmentation Warning

This is what I tell every single client in June: the dark spots you get this summer will appear in October. Hyperpigmentation from UV exposure takes 8 to 12 weeks to surface visibly. By the time you notice it, it's been there for months. The time to prevent it is now — not after you see it. Consistent vitamin C, daily broad-spectrum SPF, and a targeted brightening treatment used preventively is exponentially more effective than trying to reverse damage after the fact.

The Luminyx Brightening Complex is my summer staple — tranexamic acid and niacinamide applied daily interrupts melanin overproduction before it becomes a visible spot.

Hydration Changes Everything in Summer

Heat, air conditioning, chlorine, salt water, and sweating all dehydrate skin faster in summer than any other season. A hyaluronic acid booster applied to slightly damp skin becomes essential rather than optional. I reach for the Replenish + Restore Hydrating Booster morning and evening — it layers beautifully under SPF and over treatments without adding heaviness or shine.

What to Pause in Summer

Retinol frequency often needs to decrease in summer — not eliminate, but reduce. If you've been using retinol nightly, moving to 3 to 4 nights per week during peak summer months reduces the photosensitivity risk while maintaining your collagen-building progress. This is also the season to take a break from strong physical exfoliants, which can compromise your barrier at exactly the time you need it most intact.

Summer doesn't have to age you — it just requires a smarter protocol. Shop the Summer Skin Essentials collection here and use code SUMMERSKIN for 15% off June through August.
