What Are Growth Factors in Skincare? Everything You Need to Know

Growth factors are having a major moment in skincare right now, and for good reason β€” but with that attention comes a lot of confusion and misleading marketing. Let me give you the honest breakdown that I give my clients.

What Are Growth Factors, Exactly?

Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that regulate cellular communication. In your skin, they act as signaling molecules β€” they tell skin cells to divide, migrate, synthesize new collagen and elastin, and repair damage. When you're young, your skin produces growth factors abundantly, which is why young skin heals fast, stays firm, and maintains elasticity so effortlessly. As we age, growth factor production declines β€” and the visible signs of aging are in large part a reflection of that decline.

Types of Growth Factors Used in Skincare

The most commonly studied include Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), which stimulates skin cell proliferation and speeds repair; Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), which stimulates collagen and elastin production; and Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-Ξ²), which modulates collagen synthesis and wound healing. Quality growth factor serums use a blend of these to address aging from multiple cellular pathways simultaneously.

Do Topical Growth Factors Actually Penetrate the Skin?

This is the most common scientific objection I hear β€” and it's a valid question. Growth factor molecules are large proteins, which raises legitimate questions about penetration. However, multiple clinical studies have demonstrated measurable improvements in collagen density, wrinkle depth, and skin elasticity from topical growth factor application, regardless of the penetration debate. What the research suggests is that even if full molecular penetration is limited, growth factors influence skin biology through surface receptor activation and indirect signaling pathways. The results speak for themselves.

Who Benefits Most from Growth Factors

Growth factors shine brightest for mature skin showing signs of thinning, loss of firmness, or reduced healing capacity. They're also exceptional for post-procedure recovery β€” after microneedling, laser, or chemical peels, the skin is primed to receive and respond to growth factor signals in a way it can't in an undisturbed state.

Our Growth Factor Peptide Fusion Serum combines human growth factors with a multi-peptide complex and antioxidant botanicals for comprehensive cellular renewal β€” both as a daily anti-aging treatment and a powerful post-procedure recovery serum.
